For thirty-five years the answer to "where is the casino in Milwaukee?" has had exactly one name in it. That changes on Friday 23 October 2026 at 2 p.m., when the Ho-Chunk Nation opens its Beloit floor on the Illinois state line, the first phase of a project the trade press puts at 1.2 million square feet and at least $705 million. This guide is about the choice that now exists: stay in the city, drive south-west to the new building, or head for the Ho-Chunk halls further west. It also covers the casino Kenosha has been promised for decades and still does not have.

Staying in the city

Potawatomi Casino Hotel on Canal Street is still the only casino inside Milwaukee and the only option on this page that combines a poker room, a bingo hall and an open hotel under one roof. If you want a card game on a Thursday night or a room for the weekend, nothing on the list below replaces it. Our Potawatomi Casino Hotel guide covers the restaurants, the poker schedule and the rooms in detail, so we will not repeat it here.

Ho-Chunk Beloit: the new drive south-west

The Ho-Chunk Nation's official page lists 1,500 slot machines and 44 table games for the opening, along with three restaurants, a coffee bar and a 90-seat bar. The building sits at 777 Willowbrook Road, close to where Interstate 39/90 crosses into Illinois, and the tribe has been explicit that the state line market is the point. "We hold so much history in this area," Ho-Chunk President Jon Greendeer said in the September announcement, describing a future to share with the region's partners.

What opens on 23 October is phase one. The tribe's own plan includes a 312-room hotel with a rooftop lounge and a 2,000-seat conference space, and earlier coverage described an eventual 18-storey tower built in phases after the casino opens. Do not plan an overnight stay at Beloit this year: the hotel is not part of the opening.

Two practical warnings for the first weeks. Opening-month crowds at a new regional casino are reliably the heaviest it will ever see, so a midweek afternoon is a far better first visit than the opening weekend. And published hours for a property this new tend to move; check the official page the day you go.

Ho-Chunk Madison: slots only, by design

West of Milwaukee, the Ho-Chunk hall on Evan Acres Road in Madison is a different kind of building. It runs more than 1,300 machines from one-cent to $5 denominations, open 24 hours, and describes itself as the only facility in Wisconsin dedicated to Class II gaming, the bingo-based machine format. There are no live table games at all. That makes it the right trip for a slot player and the wrong one for anyone who wants blackjack. Its rewards club, like the others here, is for guests 21 and over.

Further out: the Dells

If the plan is a full weekend rather than an evening, Ho-Chunk's largest resort is off Interstate 90/94 at Exit 92 between Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo, with 302 rooms, a bingo hall and a full pit. It is a longer trip than any other option on this page; our Ho-Chunk Wisconsin Dells guide covers it.

The Kenosha question

Kenosha has been the subject of a Menominee casino proposal for roughly thirty years, and an earlier plan for the old Dairyland greyhound track site was rejected by Governor Scott Walker in January 2015. The current version is a $360 million Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on about 60 acres, with 1,500 slots, 50 to 55 tables, a sportsbook, a 150-room hotel and a Hard Rock Live venue of about 2,000 seats.

As of July 2026 the project had cleared federal environmental review, with the Bureau of Indian Affairs finding no significant impact. Three steps remain: the final environmental finding, the land-into-trust decision on the site, and Governor Tony Evers's concurrence, for which he has up to 90 days. No construction start or opening date has been announced. Until all three are done, there is no casino in Kenosha and no date to plan around.

Which to choose

For poker, bingo, a hotel or anything after midnight, stay on Canal Street. For a big new floor with a full pit and no city parking, Beloit from late October. For machines only, Madison. Kenosha belongs on a watch list, not an itinerary.

Playing from home instead

For the nights none of these drives makes sense, sweepstakes casinos run slot and table-style games on a free-coin promotional model. Our Wisconsin sweepstakes casino rankings list the platforms that accept the state.
