In September 1976, two Oneida women organised a fundraiser bingo game on the reservation just west of Green Bay. The organisers were Sandra Brehmer and Alma Webster. The state tried to stop tribal bingo, and in 1981 the Oneida won the court case that, as the trade publication CDC Gaming put it this September, proved the turning point for tribal gaming in Wisconsin. Every casino in the state traces back to that hall. Today the same tribe runs five gaming locations around the city, and the biggest is the official casino hotel of the Green Bay Packers.

Airport Drive: the main event

The Oneida main casino sits beside the Green Bay airport (GRB), and the hotel next door runs a free airport shuttle. The tribe's site lists more than 2,000 slot machines, and the pit spreads blackjack, roulette, craps, pai gow and baccarat from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. every day. Poker runs Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m., so a Monday or Tuesday trip will not find a card game. The sportsbook has its own pub.

This building has been the main casino since December 1993. Before that, slot machines were added to the Irene Moore Activity Center a short way along Airport Drive, which is still open and still where bingo lives.

Lambeau and the hotel

The hotel calls itself the Official Casino Hotel of the Green Bay Packers and puts itself 4.2 miles from Lambeau Field. On a home game weekend that makes it the obvious base, and the obvious place to book early. It has an indoor pool and whirlpool, about 30,000 square feet of event space, and it takes dogs up to 50 pounds for a nightly fee and refundable deposit.

The restaurant list covers most budgets: Cedar & Sage Grill House for a sit-down dinner, a Noodle Bar, The Lodge for relaxed dining, Purcell's Beer Garden, Sky World Coffee, a sportsbook pub and a Food Market open around the clock.

Which Oneida stop suits you

For a full night with tables or poker, Airport Drive. For bingo, IMAC. For a quick slots session on the west side, W. Mason, which keeps its machines running 24 hours and has its own sportsbook. The two One Stops are convenience stores with slot rooms attached, useful if you are passing rather than worth a trip on their own. The Pulaski Travel Center closes its casino at 8 p.m.

Drives beyond the city

North and west of the city are three more tribal floors, each run by a different nation.

  • Menominee Casino Resort, Keshena. The Menominee tribe's resort on Highway 47/55 bills itself as the friendliest casino in the Wisconsin Northwoods, with slots, tables, bingo, a hotel and a convention centre.
  • North Star Mohican Casino Resort, Bowler. Run by the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, with about 1,200 slots, table games, bingo, a hotel and full-service RV parking.
  • Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg. A smaller Ho-Chunk floor on US 45 with 662 machines, electronic tables and an 86-room hotel. Its Dragon's Den room holds 22 Dragon Link machines.

None of the three has the table depth of Airport Drive, but each is a quieter alternative on a Packers weekend, when rooms in town are hard to find. Our statewide guide lists every tribal casino in Wisconsin by region.
